You need to own at least the game and the cheapest ship which is the standard Aurora. Current options would be:

Digital Scout: $30

*The finished game for your PC with your RSI Aurora spaceship ready to fly
*1,000 credits

Digital Mercenary: $40

*The finished game for your PC with your RSI Aurora spaceship ready to fly.
*Exclusive access to the Alpha and Beta
*1,000 credits

Unfortunately their Starter package offer for 35$ (alpha & beta included) isn't available anymore.

However, once you got the starting ship you can travel around and play wingman roles on our bomber, constellation etc. So basically you're really fine with the Aurora, by playing you will be able to get yourself a new ship and we have more than enough slots in our bigger ships to give you some wingman jobs ;)

Well, it's not necessarily "who cares" - it seems that Life Time Insurance will help mitigate the cost of repairing the hull, but potentially won't cover additional costs -
"LTI is intended to make this more convenient for our early backers, not to unbalance the game in any way. Insurance does not negate the cost of repairing, rearming or docking your ship. It protects your hull in its current condition and does not allow you to explode a beaten up ship to exchange for a fresh one at no cost."
But don't worry - we'll be making *lot's* of suicide runs in that thing ;).
