Let the old guys die with honor and young men get wiser

A good leader is not only good in himself/herself but most time they also need
to get great assistants for helping them. In RTW, these valuable assistants/humen
resources are called "Retinue". Showing right next the bigger General's icon
as some smaller icons list.

But people die everyday, generals too. Then these valuable retinues may be also
gone forever and let their wisdom disappear in the wind.

A tip is that you can keep and move these valuable retinues from older generals,
more than 60 years old is better, to younger family members such as 16/17 to 25.

1, You need to let the generals that you want to move retinues between them to stay
within same settlement.

2, Drag and drop the retinues from older guy to younger guy like picture showing
below.

http://img63.exs.cx/img63/8453/rtwmretinue7ku.jpg

Then you will find, the younger guy get more wise after that. But of course it's
not enough. Young men need to take good care for themselves to get their very own
experiences and grow up.

So, it's done.

Then you may send the old generals to lead army and die on battlefield.
Die on battlefield is far more honorable than die in bed for a general.

2 of RTW Campaigns

1, Played as Brutii Family of Rome

The natural direction for Brutii Family of Rome seems like expanding eastward.
So I first allied with Macedonian to take the Peloponnesus, Epirus then allied
with Thracian to take care of "old friend" Macedonian and so on....

That's called "Ally with far and conquer the near" of strategy.

As one of the Rome families. The advantage is that I got 3 allies at start, 2 of
other Rome families plus the Rome Senate. And basically have a good control of
west Mediterranean Sea by numerous fleets.

The bad point for as one of Rome families is that, I REALLY HATE THE ANNOY ROME
SENATE! They keep giving me freaking orders. Doing this and doing that. Block
this and block that..... But I need time to grow up and become stronger so most
time I do what they want to keep them feel satisfied.
I smile to them at morning and curse them at night, alone.

I guess I am building an Eastern Empire. The major trouble to me in the progress
is Egyptian. They keep coming to fight me with thousand and thousand of army.
Gods know why they have so many army to send over my territories.

As a Roman, I don't have much faith on my army comparing with other factions.
So if the fate draw me into war then I don't want to just beating the enemies
but I also need to "disable" their war ability completely, forever.
Thus I exterminate every settlement I take, and destroy their temples then build
my own shrines to let them become my own loyalty people.

I ever moved my capital to Sparta once to follow the war progressing. Finally
the time is coming. I move my capital again, from Sparta to Byzantium. And my men
in Italy are ready.

After forced many of my family leaders suicide by Senate. I must accept since I was
not strong enough before.
Now, it's Pay day for Rome Senate.

You can DL this saved Campaign file from here, ZIP file about 745KB.
http://karlpeng.myweb.hinet.net/Gus_Brutii.zip
Unzip it and put the file into [RTW INSTALLED PATH]\saves.
PS, 3 armies besieged Rome. If you take it down then this Campaign will be finished
since I took more than 50 provinces already.
Or,
You can pull back the armies and leave Rome alone. Just take care of the other 2 of
Rome families first, now they are your enemies. Who knows, may take longer but you
will get better result, building an empire that including Europe, Asia and Africa.
Let the Mediterranean Sea becomes your "Inner Lake".

2, Played as Carthage - Still in progress

I guess I want to "cancel" the results of First, Second(Hannibal) and Third Punic
Wars in history.

I took and holding tight the Sicily but gave up the Sardinia. I guess I have better
chances than Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal.

But I think I am far more lousy than Hannibal himself. I still have problem to
really bring the war to Italy itself. Althought I destroyed the Scipii Family already.

In my thinkings, I will keep bothering Roman in north of Italy, Cisalpine Gaul and
Venetia. But take the whole Gaul first. Just need to watch out the Gaul Heavy cav.
They are good.

I build Carthage force mainly with Cav, cav and more cav.

You can DL this saved Campaign file from here, ZIP file about 745KB.
http://karlpeng.myweb.hinet.net/Gus_Carthage.zip
Unzip it and put the file into [RTW INSTALLED PATH]\saves.
PS, Watch out your fleets. Carthage fleets are weak. Unless you need to use them
to move armies or generals. They are easy got beating by Roman fleets.
Walk through land may take longer but more safe.

Some tips after Patch 1.2

Some tips after Patch 1.2

This morning Louis told me that Patch 1.2 has been released. I downloaded and
applied it. I don't have enough time to go into any detail deeply since it's
still my working time. Here are something "new" after I took a quick looking.

Patch 1.2 File and Mirrors

File size about 56.2 MB.

Activision:
http://download.activision.com/totalwar ... _Patch.exe
(Slow)

Mirror1:
http://tosainu.demon.nl/files/files/RTW ... _Patch.exe
(Thanks Tosa.)
Mirror2:
http://tosainu.demon.nl/files/files/RTW ... RTW1.2.zip
(ZIP)

Mirror3:
http://iadfillvip.xlontech.net/100083/g ... _patch.exe
(Quite fast)

PS,
Don't forget to rename back or restore the files that you changed to original
v1.1 files BEFORE applying the patch 1.2.

Mini UI

Patch 1.2 bring back the MTW like UI so give you more display space during
battle. You need to enable it within "preferences.txt" at [RTW Installed PATH]\
Folder since it's disabled by default.

* Looking for "preferences.txt" at [RTW Installed PATH] Folder.
* Use a text editor such as Notepad to open it and seeking the strings,
MINIMAL_UI:FALSE
Change the "FALSE" to "TRUE" so read like this,
MINIMAL_UI:TRUE

Next time when you go into battle(Local/MP) you can switch them by using
[F5]/[F6]/[F7] like picture listing below,

http://img207.exs.cx/img207/5474/rtw12battle3it.jpg

Log File

Patch 1.2 also bring the nice log file back.
I guess we need some good heart nice guys make Log Reader for us to let the
log files more useful/clear.
Again, You may need to enable it within "preferences.txt" at [RTW Installed PATH]\
Folder IF it's disabled by default.

* Looking for "preferences.txt" at [RTW Installed PATH] Folder.
* Use a text editor such as Notepad to open it and seeking the strings,
ALWAYS_LOGFILE:FALSE
TIMESTAMP_LOGFILE:FALSE
Change the "FALSE" to "TRUE" so read like this,
ALWAYS_LOGFILE:TRUE
TIMESTAMP_LOGFILE:TRUE

Done.
Then you can find the log files after every local/MP battle at,
[RTW Installed PATH]\logfiles

Misc

Some new switches within "preferences.txt".

CAMPAIGN_MAP_CAMERA_SMOOTHING:TRUE
True by default. May help the scrolling speed within Campaign Map. You may
try to enable(TRUE) or disable(FALSE) to check what is best for your system.

CHAT_MSG_DURATION:10
Default value is 10. For my lousy English I need 20 or 30.
So don't waste your calorie and time to try to insult me during games since
most time I don't read the messages or just can't understand. Plus, I don't care. :P

DISABLE_BACKGROUND_FMV:TRUE
DISABLE_ARROW_MARKERS:TRUE
And most of performance tips are still work as in 1.1.

But I am not sure about the Fire arrow lag problem.
The "descr_arrow_trail_effects_new.txt" isn't replaced by newer one. Maybe
they solved it from game engine/core or something. Need to test it on-line.

A short and quick note.
Have fun girls/guys. :)

Edit,

The ALT key is back. Now you can use ALT + Right click to move whole army and
still keep the battle array/order.

If you ever saved Replays from 1.1. Your system may freeze if you try to read
the replays from 1.2. Anyways, the 1.1 replays are useless since they are not
real replays from what you played. You can just delete all of the 1.1 old repaly
files.

Edit2,

Corrected my mistake, it's one log file per one battle.

The "Run"([R]) command still not works AFTER you grouped units. Means this bug
is still exist.
But if you dismiss the group, they will run, then you may group them again.

Edit3,

Changed mirror links to new ones.

A couple of other tricks to add to Gus list 8)

- QUICKCHAT; get rid of the "type 3 touches to send a message" cumbersome thingy and enable quickchat in preference.txt (if you read Gus message, you know what that is....). With quickchat=true, you can use T and Y again (hum... carefull, they are inversed...).

- identify your fellow players: enable all the GSID = TRUE... Then if you keep your mouse on a player name, it will display a GS user number and the first name used by that player online... So much for fakers!

- Run can be odd at time.... but it mostly works Gus. Groups run either with double click or Run key. And they run with ALT. The only case where they don't work is if;
1/ you select two ungroupped units with different speed
2/ you ask them to walk to a destination: they start to move.
3/ you group them
4/ they don't run
My recommandation is to create groups with units standing... if units are moving, you may have problems if they are "too different"

quickchat=true is set in "preference.txt" file at RTW main directory.

(early this morning, it didn't work, Louis, because I didn't save the file :) I tried it again and it worked)

I also switch 'T' and 'Y' definition (T for" talk" and Y for "yes! sir!"), because I am already familiar with that definition in MTW. In RTW 1.2 and quickchat= true, it is flipped. Change that in "options".

Will try the GSID thing soon. But one question: I never register PinkyPearl and various odd names, how does GS knows it is me? through CDKEY?

Louis,

They won't run as my test by using the way I used for grouping whole army.

Deployment (Before press the "start battle" button)
1, Deploying and arrangeing the army, say, 20 units, as the battle array/order
that I want.
2, Press [Ctrl]+[A] to select the whole 20 of units, then, press [G] to group
them. (So, whole army as one group/group #1)

Press the "start battle" button to "Let the dice fly high".
3, Whole 20 of units are still in selected mode(Highlight).
4, Press [Alt] + Right Mouse Click to order my whole Army(as one group/group #1)
to move to a point that I want them go to.
5, They starting walk, then, I press [R] to order them run(Move quickly).

The problem is here, as you can see their action or watch the "Up Arrow" shows
in Unit card that indicates they are walking(One "Up Arrow") or running (Two
"Up Arrow"). All show that they are still walking AFTER I press the [R] key.

At this point during they are walking even I ordered them run already. If I press
[G] again to dismiss the group but the whole army is still in selected mode(Highlight)
and keep walking.
Then, I press [R] again, ohhhh, now they are REALLY start running. I can see this
by watching them move a lot of faster than before on screen plus their unit cards
now show Two "Up Arrow"(Run mode).

Then I press [G] again to put them back to the group mode. And they still keep
running until the point I told them to go to.

I tested 2 factions at some of local custom games and all showed as above.

BTW, the Flaming arrows lag problem seems to be solved. I didn't notice the
lag within local custom games. Not sure how they are at MP games.

EDIT,

I took more tests. The "Run" + group did show odd.

Same as above steps 1, - 3, but if I use [Alt] + Double Right Mouse Click for instead,
then, the whole Army group DID run.

Or,

Same as above steps 1, - 5, they won't run even I press [R] already. But if they
reach the point I want to. Then, if I order the whole Army group turn face
([Alt] + Right Mouse Drog and release). Now they run like F1 Race to turn battle
front. (Looks really funny.)

Ok, I guess we can ignore this odd since it just affect people like me who use
group command with very simple way. I don't want whole Army group run at start
for saving their energy. But most time I use [R] to let them run if they are nearing
the point I want to or for against enemies's action.

Sorry guys, don't bother with this although I am sure this will annoy me for my
future battles.

Looks like flaming arrow lag is fixed, I think. I didn't need to modify the data/desc_* files.

THE MOTHER OF ALL TRICKS

How to easily make all SP maps available to MP...

Go to that folder: C:\Programmes\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data

open the custom_locations.txt file

Then add

custom_location Test_49-98
{
location 49 98
image data/menu/grass1.tga
sett_locked no
summer no
}

Et voilà; you got a new map! That map name is Test_49-98. It is the map for the square X=49 Y=98 in the campaign map.
Rince and repeat.

The real sweet part is that; ONLY THE HOST NEEDS IT!

:D

Don't watch bloody pictures while you are eating dinner

You can get nice short animations when you or your allies kill enemies gernerals
during battles of RTW.

First time, second time watch those animations about a poor guy got hit, croaking
and falls down might be quite freshly fun. But soon becoming so annoying especial
you are busy for battles.

* Looking for "preferences.txt" at [RTW Installed PATH] Folder.
* Use a text editor such as Notepad to open it and seeking the strings,
EVENT_CUTSCENES:TRUE
Change the "TRUE" to "FALSE" so read like this,
EVENT_CUTSCENES:FALSE

From now on, you won't watch the bloody pictures while you are eating dinner.

To Host or Not to Host, that's the question

I move some of my post about hosting MP games of RTW from Priv forum to here.

If you just want to join games on-line for MP of RTW. You just need to get the
lastest patch and make sure you have same version of RTW with hosts.(Including
MODs.) No need to take care of Firewall(Keep ON, of course)/Router etc.

But, if you also want to host games on-line for MP of RTW. Then there are something
to do with your Router/Firewall/Ports.

As I know, there are 2 of simple way to do so for hosting MP games of RTW.

1, Enable DMZ(DeMilitarized Zone) option for your Router if it supported(Hardware).
And, keep software Firewall "ON" don't change(Software).
This way is quite simple to do since most of DMZ option is just one check and
one click to turn it ON/OFF within Routers.
Enabled DMZ may let some people feel nakedly at Internet but it's really not so bad
since most of ports are still not opened but visible only. And, you are still
protected by firewall. Last, you can turn DMZ off after you leave GS.
If your router supports DMZ then this way is safe, simple, easy and fast.
I use this way to host games for MTW/RTW.

2, Open ports that RTW needed to host games on-line within Router.
This way is a bit of more complex but, again, one time of work only.
You need to know which port RTW needed to host games on-line(please ask Annie, I
forgot). And then type the port number and open them within your router.
This way is for Routers that don't support DMZ option or people don't want to
enable DMZ. And this way will let the ports keep visible all the time even you
are not playing RTW on-line.

What I don't recommend is that you just disable Firewall to host MP of RTW.
This is a dangerous Internet world. You don't know how many of freaking people
out there. So, either way you still need to keep software Firewall ON to get
protected. Most of software firewall on the market today will just ask the
"permit" for the first time when a program access Internet. Then won't bother
you again after you allowed the accessing right for the program(such as RTW)
UNTIL the program get update or patch(means, it need permit by the Firewall again).

So, as in this post, there is actually a 3, Disable Firewall(software) to host
MP of RTW on-line.
This way is also for people doesn't use Routers at all but accessing Internet
via DSL/Cable MODEMs only.

Although it's highly not recommended but totally up to you.
Sometimes it may be nothing happened at all while you disabled Firewall and
playing games on-line.
But just one day if you meet the high tide of new worms, then this will be very
trouble even stop you from accessing Internet and/or your computer.
